Northern Ontario Aquaculture Association was incorporate July 4, 2002
under the Ontario Incorporation Act with the Ministry of Consumer and
Business Services.  A full time office was established and full time
program coordinator was hired March 2003. The activities of the
association have resulted in increased workloads beyond the level of the
full time staff person and as a result a Youth Intern was hired under the
NOHFC Yip Program.  The Youth Intern performed the duties of the
Assistant program Coordinator for a one year term.  This position
became essential to the future existence of the NOAA and a second full
time position was established.
The aquaculture industry is a relatively new economic sector in Northern
Ontario. Until 1962, fish culture in Northern Ontario remained exclusively
a government endeavour mainly to support lake and stream
rehabilitation. Manitoulin had a government-run cage culture facility
operating in the Swift Current area on LaCloche until 1990. Other
government-run hatchery operations exist at Blue Jay Creek and Gore
Bay.  The first private aquaculture operation in the area for the
production of rainbow trout was established in 1986 in Lake Wolsey.
Around the same time, another significant cage culture operation for the
production of rainbow trout was established in Parry Sound. The
industry was largely established within the last 20 years and the bulk of
aquaculture production comes from lake based cage culture operations
located in the Northern Lake Huron area. The perseverance and
stakeholder commitment of the Northern Ontario cage culture industry
has resulted in establishment of an important local and regional industry
sector within a span of just 20 years. The northern part of Lake Huron
and the North Channel possess many assets for continued aquaculture
development from the availability of abundant, high quality water
resources, easy access to large domestic and foreign markets and a
will-developed industry infrastructure.
There are currently five site operators in the Manitoulin LaCloche region
with a total of 8 farm sites, with an estimated annual production of 5.6
million pounds of round live weight product. A sixth cage site operator is
in the Parry Sound area with an annual estimated production of 2.5
million pounds. The First nations aquaculture sites in the Manitoulin area
produce approximately 1.0 million pounds annually. These operations
account for approximately 80% of the total production for Ontario. The
majority of the cage culture production is concentrated in Northern
Ontario, and specifically in the North Channel / Georgian Bay region.

The Northern Ontario Aquaculture Association continues working
cooperatively with
all government agencies to establish a regulatory
framework in which to grow the industry in Ontario. Promotion &
administration of research  & development projects that will produce
sound & factual scientific data are priority...
