Cage Sinking & Raising
The raising of the cages is a process that takes place at the beginning of each
spring, when the ice starts to melt and move. Not all fish farmers have
submergeable cages. But some cage systems do, in order to avoid damage to
their cages once the ice starts to break up in the springtime.  The farmers
continuously monitor ice condition and movement.

The pictures below displays, Meeker's Aquaculture cage system submerge to
avoid any ice damage. The only evidence of an existing fish farm is the floating
buoys.
The pictures that follow will demonstrate the various steps that are required
to bring the cages and fish back up to the surface after the ice has moved out
and no longer poses a threat to the cages or the fish. This particular cage
system was specifically designed by the owner for his site. He designed it in
such a way so that it is easy to submerge and raise. Generally, each individual
owner will tailor their cage set-up to better suit their specific site and to
comply with Ontario's Best Management Practice for net-pen Aquaculture.
